Processions Begin

The religious fervor of the people of Progreso is no less evident than during the days leading up to December 12th as the processions that began this week and will continue until Sunday December 11th.

The children’s procession consisted of about 3,000 people and in the evening was the march of the oil workers who were sprinkled with holy water by Padre Lorenzo Mex Jiménez as they left centro.

 

City Has Not Complied

Manuel Contreras Alcalá, Councilor for Urban Development and Public Markets could be summoned to testify before the local Public Prosecutor said Gúmer Campos Balam.

“The public prosecutor's office is aware of the case and may intervene.  Campos Balam, city publicist sued the city and was awarded $58,697 because the city did not give him a place in the rebuilt market.

The city and Councilor Contreras Alcalá has not complied with the judgment to award a space in the market and is ignoring the legal decisions.

“They wanted me to sign a document in May, saying I would cease and desist further action with my lawsuit against City Council” he said.

 

Buses to Improve

Marco Antonio Domínguez Sandoval, Director of Transportation began notifying the bus owners last month about the status of their buses.

 "They were told what needed to be done and we hope to see the improvements” advised Domínguez Sandoval.

“We are willing to abide by what the Director of Transportation tells us” said Raul Rodriguez, head of the Cooperativa Renacimiento, “I have 3 buses out of circulation now receiving maintenance.”

 

Chicxulub Wants Ixil

City government believes they have a good case to fight for Uaymitún.

“Ixil does not provide any kind of public service to Uaymitún” said Councilor José Delio Casanova Aké.

“On the other hand, Progreso provides all the services they receive including garbage pick-up when the tourists from Canada and United States are here.”

“Ixil pays property taxes and does not provide services to Uaymitún; they want a new boundary to include this area of the coast.

Casanova Aké acknowledges that the process is not easy and will take time as the decision comes from the State Congress.

 

Christmas Tree Comes to Life

About 2000 people gathered in the main park last night to watch the lively festival and the lighting of the Christmas tree.  More than 100 children wore sparkly costumes and danced to various Christmas tunes.

The Mayor announced her Christmas message and was accompanied by Deputy Daniel Zacarías Martinez.

The most awaited for moment was the descent of the gull from the tower clock and the arrival of baby Jesus who was the Mayor ‘s grandson, Edgar José Zacarías Magadan, son of the Honorary President of DIF, María Esther Magadan Alonzo and Edgar Zacarias Lopez.

 

Local Gossip Rumours not confirmed.

Before the race for the PRI candidate for Mayor, it is said that the candidate is known but is a secret so the party appears united and to avoid protests dissatisfaction from the local PRI groups.

The aspirants are Luis Ernesto Martínez Ordaz, Assistant Deputy of Yucatan Public Security, Member of Parliament Daniel Zacarías Martínez and Raúl Enrique Lara Caro who was a former mayor.

PAN is making a lot of noise about the PRI while they themselves do not have a candidate.

Rumour has it that the current Mayor María Esther Alonzo Morales is looking for a job with the State government but not for herself but for her husband the former mayor, Enrique Magadan.
